Does Solar Work During a Power Cut? The Truth About Solar Backup in Sri Lanka

Here's a question we get asked constantly, and the honest answer surprises most people: if you only have solar panels and the grid goes down, your house goes dark too even in broad daylight, with the sun shining directly on your roof.

It sounds backwards. You have panels. The sun is out. Shouldn't you have power? The answer is no, unless your system has one extra component — and understanding why is the single most important thing to know before you invest in solar.

Why Solar Panels Shut Off During a Power Cut?

A standard grid-tied solar system (panels + inverter, no battery) is required by design to automatically shut down the moment the grid loses power. This isn't a fault or a bug — it's a safety feature called anti-islanding protection.

Here's the reasoning: when there's a power cut, CEB or LECO technicians may be out working on the lines to restore supply. If your solar system kept generating and feeding electricity back into those same lines, it could energize a line that a technician believes is safely dead — putting their life at risk. So every grid-connected inverter is built to detect a grid outage and cut off automatically, protecting the people repairing the fault.

The result: your panels keep producing electricity, but your inverter refuses to send it anywhere — including into your own home — until grid power returns.

Solar-Only vs. Solar + Battery: The Real Defences Compared

This is the actual decision that matters, point by point:

So What's the Right "Defence" Against Power Cuts?

If your main reason for going solar is saving money on your electricity bill, a solar-only system does that job well.

But if your main reason is not being left in the dark during an outage — which, in Sri Lanka, is very often the real motivation — solar panels alone will not get you there. You need a battery energy storage system (ESS) paired with the panels. The battery is what detects the grid cutting out, disconnects safely from the grid (so it's not dangerous to technicians either), and keeps your home running from stored charge — this is sometimes called "island mode."

The Question to Ask Any Solar Company in Sri Lanka

Before you sign with any installer, ask this one direct question: "If the grid goes down right now, will my lights stay on?"

If the honest answer is no, you're being sold a bill-reduction system, not a backup system — and that's fine, as long as you know which one you're buying. A lot of people assume "I have solar" automatically means "I'm covered during a blackout," and only find out otherwise the first time the power actually cuts.

Where BatteryLab Energy Comes In

We build every solar system with this exact conversation upfront — because we started as a backup power company first (as Sri Lanka's authorized Bluetti dealer) and expanded into solar second. So we don't default to selling you panels alone and hoping you don't ask the blackout question later. We'll tell you plainly whether the system you're considering will actually keep your lights on during a power cut, and size the battery accordingly if that's what you need.

Want a system that's actually built as a defence against power cuts, not just a bill-reducer?
